Creating a Successful Raised Garden Bed, Organic Soil Amendments

Raised Garden beds have become increasingly popular. No matter how poor the ground is or how small of a space you have, raised garden beds are an effective way to grow productive and healthy vegetable plants and herbs. I have even seen amazing raised garden beds built right on top of concrete and asphalt pavement.

In ‘How to Create a Productive Garden’, Joe Gardener explains how to make the best raised garden on any budget, while providing your plants with the perfect growing environment

Worm Castings: Here’s another example of not much is needed to make a big difference. If you can find this in bag or bulk, buy it. While it’s not readily available, nor is it inexpensive, it’s worth it. And again, fortunately, a little goes a long way. Worm castings are significantly higher in all the primary nutrients than ordinary top soil and adds one more layer of complexity to your overall soil makeup. Suffice it to say, worm castings (worm manure) is one of my secret weapons to creating highly productive garden soil.

Creating a Successful Raised Garden Bed

The garden bed should be wide and deep enough to allow roots to grow out and down. A good soil structure should bind together when you squeeze a handful of soil and easily crumbles when disturbed.

Adding organic soil amendments give your garden an extra boost, improving the quality of the soil, and adding vital nutrients plants needs to thrive.

Drainage is also an important factor. Water should be able to flow slowly out the bed to reduce over saturated soil and root rot.

The addition of organic material and slow release organic amendments will help build the soil.
