Most of today’s fertilizers contain toxic chemicals which are absorbed into the plants, they end up in the food we eat, vegetables and cereals. They also end up in our ground water, which eventually ends in our drinking water.
“Human Carcinogens The most significant harmful effects come from fertilizer that is designed to kill or prevent weeds. According to the EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs, 12 of the most popular pesticides in the United States have ingredients known to cause cancer. Although “organic” fertilizers are guaranteed to be safe for the environment, the body and free of pesticides,” according to Live Strong. , as consumers, be diligent, look online at the organic certificate and make sure there are no restrictions. Make sure the product is registered in your state as well. Since each state has there own rules and regulations, it is best that you check. So, I started with small steps, a garden. I got the whole family involved. We started with just a few tomato plants, then added peppers, green beans, and squash. I know exactly what is going into our food and know it is safe for my family.
Instead of chemical or synthetic fertilizers, I use worm castings as a soil amendment. It is perfect! The plants in my garden are huge, healthy and very productive.
I encourage everyone to try growing just a few plants, it is definitely well worth the effort. Now we eat the best tasting vegetable my family has ever had and I don’t have to pay the high cost to eat organic!
