Orlando Vermicompost: Worm Castings, Black Castings, Organic Fertilizer

Vermicompost, also called worm castings, vermicast, and worm compost, is an excellent soil amendment and organic fertilizer, alive with nutrients and microorganisms.

According to the Clemson Cooperative Extension: Much like traditional composting, worm composting works by creating an ideal environment for various organisms to break down organic matter. Microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria and protozoa, along with larger organisms such as insects, assist worms in the process. When added to garden or potting soil, worm compost:

Provides nutrients to the soil
Increases the soil’s ability to hold nutrients in a plant-available form
Improves the soil structure’
Improves the aeration and internal drainage of heavy clay soils
Increases the water holding ability of sandy soils
Provides numerous beneficial bacteria

How Vermicompost is Used

Top Dressing: An easy way to use vermicompost, for both indoor and outdoor plants, is to add it directly to the soil around the plant. For a rich organic mixture with the necessary minerals, mix equal parts organic potting soil and vermicompost, this will also reduce watering requirements.

In the Garden: Before the growing season is an excellent time to incorporate vermicompost into the garden. Just add a couple of inches of vermicompost to the garden and turn the soil as usual.

Starting Seeds: Whether you’re starting the seedlings indoors or when you’re transplanting plants, just add vermicompost to the growing medium for an increased healthy crop.

For fast germination environment, add one part peat moss to two parts vermicompost.

To help reduce transplant shock, mix one part organic potting soil to two parts vermicompost.

Beautiful Lawn: All plants can benefit from vermicompost, including grass. Just spread a thin layer, so that it falls between the blades of grass. You can use a seed spreader or by hand, an excellent boost for problems areas.
