Vermitechnology: The Solution to Chemical-Based Agriculture

The University of California, Davis Study, though just one of many studies with similar results, shows pregnant women living within one mile of crops treated with pesticides are at an alarmingly higher risk of having a child with autism. The risk decreased the further away the pregnant women lived away from where the pesticides were being used.

“The study of 970 children, born in farm-rich areas of Northern California, is part of the largest project to date that is exploring links between autism and environmental exposures. [It is] the third project to link prenatal pesticide exposures to autism and related disorders.

The weight of evidence is beginning to suggest that mothers’ exposures during pregnancy may play a role in the development of autism spectrum disorders,’ said Kim Harley, an environmental health researcher at the University of California.”

The research centered around three classes of pesticides: Organophosphate, Pyrethroids, and Carbamates. Organophosphate has been linked to attention deficits, reduced IQ, and delayed brain development. Pyrethroids and Carbamates are both associated with developmental delays.

The study goes on to say, “Autism, a developmental disorder, is characterized to varying degrees by difficulty in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors or movements. About 1 in 68 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
